Freeman School of Business About the Program Program Philosophy Admissions Curriculum Faculty Partners

"Let’s be clear about the real doctoral faculty issue. It’s not about day-to-day recruiting challenges, escalating faculty salaries, adhering to accreditation standards, or protecting the professoriate. The real threat is to the very core of collegiate business schools and institutions of higher education – scholarship."

From the forward to Sustaining Scholarship in Business Schools Report of the Doctoral Faculty Commission to AACSB International’s Board of Directors

Tulane University offers post-doctoral training to academically qualified candidates in two basic areas of concentration: finance and management. Within the finance concentration, candidates may pursue a research specialization in finance or accounting. Within the management concentration, candidates can pursue a research specialization in organizational behavior or marketing.

The structure of the post-doctoral bridge program for academically qualified faculty has three parts:

  • The first part is a two-week introductory module on the Tulane University campus during the summer, normally in June. Participants are introduced to the foundations of business education and research through seminars covering business research methods and the theory and management of organizations. The latter portion of the module covers the economic and sociological view of organizations as well as an overview of management strategy. The candidates also are introduced to the pedagogy and teaching methods of business schools. This includes sessions on the case method, discussion leadership and the use of technology in business education and research.
  • The second part of the program consists of six three-day weekend seminars in the area of specialization. These seminars are offered over the period from July through May of the following year and cover the basic foundation knowledge, advanced topics in the area, and research applications. The research applications seminar is specific to the faculty member's area of interest, i.e., accounting, finance, organization behavior and marketing. The seminars are offered on-site at Tulane's campus. The candidates are required to travel to New Orleans three times during each of the fall and springs semesters to attend weekend seminar sessions.
  • The third part of the program is preparation and defense of a research paper. Each candidate is required to demonstrate the ability to formulate and execute a research project in the area of specialization. This project is formulated during the fall and executed during the fall and spring semesters while the candidates are completing the research seminar. Freeman faculty members will be available to assist with this project on an ongoing basis. The final report will be presented during the final weekend trip to Tulane's campus and must be approved by a committee of faculty from the area of specialization.

Candidates will be recognized at Tulane's Unified Graduation Ceremony in May of each year.
